According to the Bongmyungsagui (Record of copy made at the order of the king), and the Seokgangilgui (Journal of Chae Yongsin), Chae Yongsin portrayed the face of Emperor Gojong in January~April, 1901, after he made some portraits of King Taejo and successive reigns in the winter of 1900. This work is assumed to be one of the copies made after the portrait drawn in 1901. So far, three of the portraits of Gojong's face at the age of 49 are remaining. All of them are frontal portraits, describing the emperor wearing Iksungwan, or an official hat, and Hwangryongpo, or an official uniform of the emperor. The copies in the possession of the National Museum in Jeonju and Wongwang University Museum depict a full-length figure, and a copy in a private possession shows a half-length figure. This copy shows the same drawing, but it portrays the upper half of the body. With the 3-dimensional depiction of the hat and the delicate description of face including the muscles facial, the copy is photographic, the unique style of Chae Yongsin. The discolored beard makes the face look sick, but the whole appearance looks young for his age. Judging from the record of birth year, date, and hour in the upper left corner, it is assumed to have been circulated for private enshrinement to celebrate the birth of the emperor. Showing a woman washing silk in a brook in the moonlight, this is a kind of a portrait with a background of small-scaled landscape. The complimentary writing of Woljeon Jang Wusung seems to confirm this work as Lee Jaekwan’s. The description of a person and branches of trees, and the light coloring show the characteristics of Lee Jaekwan’s unique painting style. The pen name “Toecho” refers to Park Seunghyun (朴升鉉 1778~ ?) who served as an Assistant Writer in the Office of Special Counselors. The text explains that he was a senior fifth-rank lecturer at the National Confucian Academy, and the embroidered patch decorated with a single crane also indicates his position as an official below the third rank. Following the Joseon Dynasty rules of portraiture for meritorious subjects, this is a full body portrait of a man seated in an armchair wearing a green official uniform and traditional headdress, facing left in a three-quarter profile. With a number of features including the shadows on the face, the vivid creases in the clothing, the angle of the feet, the leopard skin over the armchair, and the straw mat with floral designs on the footrest, it reflects the style of the late Joseon Dynasty. It successfully displays jeonsinsajo 傳神寫照, a unique characteristic of traditional Korean portraits which depicts not only the form but the spirit embodied by the person. Lightly-colored paintings of flowers and birds with composition of diagonally-cut branches, a typical Kim Hondo style, and the e-x-p-r-e-s-s-i-o-n of branches that modified the method of expressing branches by bundle are similar to Danwonbub, that appeared when he was fifty years old and was named after his pen name, but the excessive branches made it too complex. His expertise was in landscape of the Ahn Kyun and Julpa styles, and he also became known for lyrical Indian ink painting of flowers and birds. This painting shows his favorite subject, a hill with reeds by the water in the early winter. The regular and plain brush stroke and the form of the wild goose show the characteristics of Lee Jing’s works. There are tens of paintings assumed to be his works. This painting of egret which seems to sleepily standing by the water with reeds and lotus leaves is also one of the works assumed to be his. The technique using Indian ink reflects well the characteristics of the painting style in the middle of the Joseon period.
